Terrestrial Research Project
The Wildlife Research program offers hands-on experience in conservation, research, and wildlife management in South Africa's Hartenbos. Participants engage in fieldwork, data analysis, and trail camera maintenance while enjoying weekends for cultural and tourist activities.
The Wildlife Research and Conservation Program embodies Nkonzo Wildlife's ideals of "Educate Act Empower". Participants engage in hands-on research and conservation initiatives, contributing to short and long-term goals. Through education and action, they empower themselves to make a positive change for African wildlife, ecosystems, and the planet.
Field Work
In the Wildlife Research program, participants engage in diverse research and conservation projects aimed at improving wildlife welfare and understanding both within and outside protected areas. They undertake field observations, data management, and wildlife management assistance. All participants rotate through various initiatives at Nkonzo Wildlife as part of the program, including research.
You’ll join the team to observe, collect data, and assist with projects and data entry. Project time depends on quotas, weather, and animal behavior. Training in bush basics like survival and ethical approaches will be provided. We prioritize ethical operations and provide understanding of our field methods.
Requirements
Participants must be in good physical and mental health. They'll work mostly on foot, hiking to access work areas while carrying their own backpack with lunch, water, snacks, layers, and equipment.
Schedule |
Participants will be met at George Airport (GRJ), South Africa, and transported to their accommodation where they'll receive introductions, and instructions. The following day, orientation and safety introductions will cover reserve operations, living in South Africa, recommended areas, and introductions to research and conservation work. Field operations begin the next day. Flights should be scheduled to and from George Airport (GRJ), South Africa.
We ask that all participants understand that our work is conducted on wildlife reserves and that schedules may change based on animal locations, accessibility, weather, and other factors.
Lifestyle
Participants stay together in Hartenbos. Optional weekend activities and trips to lesser-known areas of the Western and Northern Cape are available at an extra cost.
Included
Participants enjoy shared accommodation with basic cold breakfast (cereals) every day, packed lunch Monday to Friday, conservation fees, daily access to wildlife reserves, project-related transportation, a 24/7 emergency standby team, guided research and management activities, all training material, housekeeping, airport transfer (GRJ), unlimited WiFi, and a certificate.
Excluded
Excluded from the package are dinners and weekend lunches (though a fully equipped self-catering kitchen and nearby restaurants are available), curios and souvenirs, drinks, weekend activities, flights, visas, laundry, and anything not explicitly stated.
